Flying our 36 kg boy Zeus from Spain to Sri Lanka

In June 2023 we left Mallorca, Spain, our home for 6.5 years to make our slow way home to Australia. Boy what a journey it has been. We made the decision to fly Zeus to Colombo, Sri Lanka via Doha for an initial period of 2.5 months. What a blast Sri Lanka was. Travelling around 70% of the island with a 36 kg dog in the back of the tuk tuk was both challenging and hair brain crazy. But hey we did it and it was a total blast. Im convinced Zeus is plastered all over you tube after about a zillion videos were taken of him across the island. Flying to Sri Lanka from Spain was relatively straight forward. We used an animal transporter out of Barcelona called Baggage Pets. They did a reasonable job and Zeus arrived in Sri Lanka safely. There is no post entry quarantine in Sri Lanka for dogs coming from abroad, so after a few hours of paperwork he was delivered to us on this tropical island paradise. There is a very relaxed rule that dogs must stay within a reasonable radius of the capital city of colombo for the first 2 weeks of their arrival. No-one follows this rule, no-one enforces it and the animal transporter who did the arrival paperwork just laughed and said go where you like, do what you want. We did just that. Lakshini at Pet Travels Lanka was amazing. A husband and wife team who handle dog imports and exports out of Sri Lanka. (she did our onward trip to Malaysia too). Travelling around the island whilst challenging with a big dog had its limitations, it really was the trip of a lifetime. For anyone considering embarking on a journey like this take the plunge! Don't hit that pause button just book those flights and go go go!
