"How to Prepare Your Dog for International Travel: Flying from Malaysia to New Zealand"

We have spent a lead time of approx. 7 months preparing our pooch to enter New Zealand. What a process! Take it from me we have been travelling around the world for years with our dogs and the process and worry never gets any easier.

So our boy Zeus arrived in Malaysia from Spain via Sri Lanka about 7 months ago. And from his very first day of arrival into a 7 day quarantine period the clock started ticking for his onward travel to New Zealand. And yes a new process started again.

The obligatory 180 day count down means your pooch must stay in Malaysia for this whole period. Don't get me wrong we freely chose to come to Malaysia via Sri Lanka with our dog so of course we understood our obligations beforehand. But the 7 months is a full on process involving a range of vaccinations, blood tests, parasite treatments etc. Everything is meticulously planned with your vet and your animal transporter (should you choose to use one). The planning is critical if your'e going to get this mission over the line.

For this move we decided to use an animal transporter who is also a government approved vet, so it was a one stop shop. Very useful. Dr K knows the process inside out and has been a godsend managing some last minute changes introduced by the lovely bureaucrats in NZ.

And now Zeus has a Malaysian passport, yet another passport. Bonkers really!

Total cost approx. $11,000 NZD from Malaysia to New Zealand. Yep an eye watering amount of money with endless regulations attached. This includes a 10 day stay in quarantine. I hope Zeus will be feasting on caviar and lobster!
